The Power of Curcumin and Butyrate Together
Our research at Biologic has us probing to validate hypotheses about technologies we believe can add value or quality to human life. It is well understood and accepted that Curcumin extracts of varying types can deliver anti-inflammatory activity of varying degrees (Chainani-Wu 2003, Rao, Basu et al. 2013). In our own published research (Biologic Pharmamedical Research), we showcase novel discoveries in curcumin pharmacology, demonstrating how various curcuminoid metabolites differ in activity. We also reveal what can be done to utilize this new knowledge to engineer new and improved curcumin extracts, allowing them to perform differently than regular curcumin extracts (Cavaleri 2018, Cavaleri 2019).
While our engineered curcuminoid extracts—Curcumin BioBDMC™—have proven in the field and in research to deliver amazing inflammatory relief, we continue to search for ways to further advance their potential. The patented BioBDMC™ inhibits a key protein that facilitates transcription (MSK1) and the generation of inflammatory cytokines, something that regular curcumin extracts cannot deliver. Accordingly, our research with the short-chain fatty acid Butyrate, another focal therapeutic agent of ours, has shown us a novel way to heighten the potential of our already potent BioBDMC™. Butyrate itself displays significant anti-inflammatory properties (Andoh, Bamba et al. 1999, Chen and Vitetta 2020), but there is much more to the additive strategy than just a direct anti-inflammatory boost.
Low and behold, our R&D team constructed the Curcumin BioBDMC™–Butyrate complex—CURCUTYRATE™—and put it to the test, targeting various markers of inflammation and transcription factors associated with making inflammatory cytokines. Our novel patented CURCUTYRATE™, made from the complexing of BioBDMC™ and Butyrate, has delivered a significantly elevated anti-inflammatory activity, as demonstrated by our Biologic experimental data.
The Role of Butyrate in Gut Health and Inflammation Control
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced by the probiotic culture, or microbiome, of the gut. It extends significant direct anti-inflammatory activity to colonocytes and the lining of the intestinal tract (Andoh, Bamba et al. 1999). This volatile fatty acid inhibits inflammatory cytokines, but more importantly, it enhances the transcription of IL-10 (Säemann, Böhmig et al. 2000), a unique anti-inflammatory cytokine. IL-10 is directly anti-inflammatory, unlike most cytokines, which promote inflammation (Säemann, Böhmig et al. 2000, Siddiqui and Cresci 2021).
Butyrate also creates the ideal environment in the colon—by establishing the right pH and fuel source—to support the proliferation of gut-friendly microbiota. This leads to improved mucin production, protecting the mucosal lining and creating conditions that deter pathogens (Finnie, Dwarakanath et al. 1995, Walker, Bhargava et al. 2021). Research is even uncovering how butyrate may play a role in the treatment of colon cancer (Han 2017).
Synergy with Curcumin and the Microbiome
The promotion and protection of the gut microbiome by butyrate generate an ideal setting for the maximized utilization of our potent Curcumin BioBDMC™. Many botanical agents, including curcumin and ginseng, depend on a healthy microbiome to deliver their maximal systemic effects. The beneficial bacteria in your gut metabolize these polyphenols into active compounds, which then travel through the body to deliver the benefits we often attribute to the original herb (Di Meo, Margarucci et al. 2019, Scazzocchio, Minghetti et al. 2020). When the microbiome is damaged, it fails to facilitate this activity, which may explain why some individuals experience reduced efficacy from these natural remedies.
